Asian Handicap Calculator

Enter the line, the price and the final score. This grades it — including the quarter lines that split your stake in two.

A quarter line — half your stake runs on -1 and half on -0.5.

The handicap is applied from your selection’s point of view, so the sign always means the same thing: negative gives goals away, positive takes them. Switching sides does not flip the number you typed — enter the line as your bet slip shows it.

A quarter line is not one bet on a fractional number — it is two equal bets on the lines either side of it, settled independently. That is why it can half-win or half-lose, which no single line can do.

What is an Asian handicap?

An Asian handicap is a soccer bet that removes the draw by giving one team a head start or a deficit before the game counts.

Take −1.5 and your team must win by two. Take +0.5 and a draw pays. Because the handicap shifts the result, there is no third outcome to lose to.

What makes it Asian is the quarter line. A handicap of −0.75 is not a single bet on a fractional number — it is half your stake on −0.5 and half on −1.0, settled separately. That is why these bets can half-win or half-lose, which no ordinary spread can do.

How it works

An Asian handicap adds a number to your selection’s score before the bet settles. Take −1.5 and your team has to win by two; take +0.5 and a draw pays. The sign is always read from your selection’s point of view, which is what makes it unambiguous.

Whole and half lines behave the way you would expect. A half line cannot push, because the adjusted margin can never land on zero. A whole line can: −1 with a one-goal win means the adjusted margin is exactly zero and your stake comes back.

Quarter lines are where people get lost, and the resolution is simpler than it looks. A quarter line is not a bet on a fractional number at all — it is two bets. −0.75 is half your stake on −0.5 and half on −1.0, settled independently and added together. That is exactly why a quarter line can half-win or half-lose, which no single line can do.

So −0.75 with a one-goal win: the −0.5 half wins outright, the −1.0 half pushes, and you collect profit on half your stake with the other half returned. Half win. The same line with a two-goal win wins both halves outright.

One implementation note worth stating, because it is a real source of wrong settlements: quarter detection is done in quarter-units as integers rather than by testing the line against 0.25 with floating point. A line arriving as 0.7499999999 is a bug that grades bets incorrectly, and it is exactly the kind of bug that never shows up in testing.

The formula

adjusted margin = your score − their score + handicap

  > 0 → win (stake × decimal returned)
  = 0 → push (stake returned)
  < 0 → loss (nothing returned)

quarter lines split the stake in two:
  +0.25 → half on 0.0, half on +0.5
  −0.75 → half on −0.5, half on −1.0
  −1.25 → half on −1.0, half on −1.5

each half settles on its own line, and the
returns are added.

Quarter lines split into the two neighbouring lines. Everything else runs as a single bet on the line itself.

A worked example

−0.75 at 1.95, $100 stake, and your team wins 2–1.

The line splits: $50 on −0.5 and $50 on −1.0. The margin is +1. On −0.5 the adjusted margin is +0.5, a win — $97.50 back. On −1.0 it is exactly 0, a push — $50 back.

Total returned is $147.50, so the profit is +$47.50. Graded as a half win.

Win 3–1 instead and both halves win outright: $195 back, +$95 profit, a full win. Draw 1–1 and both halves lose: a full loss. The quarter line is doing exactly what it is designed to do — softening the edges of the result.

Common questions

What does a quarter line like −0.75 mean?
It is two bets. Half your stake goes on −0.5 and half on −1.0, each settled independently and added together. That is why it can half-win or half-lose — a single line cannot.
When does an Asian handicap push?
When the adjusted margin lands exactly on zero, which needs a whole-number line. Half and quarter lines cannot push in full — though a quarter line can push on one of its two halves.
How do I read the sign?
From your selection’s point of view, always. Negative means giving goals away, positive means taking them. Enter the line exactly as your bet slip shows it and switch the side selector to match.
Why use an Asian handicap instead of a normal one?
Because it removes the draw and gives a much finer range of lines. Quarter increments let a book price a matchup precisely, and the partial win and loss outcomes reduce variance relative to an all-or-nothing spread.
Does this handle level lines?
Yes. A line of 0 — draw no bet — pushes on a draw and settles normally otherwise. Enter 0 as the handicap.
